What are Tension Headaches?

Tension headaches are headaches that are typically a chronic, constant pain, “like a tight band or vice around your head”, caused by tension in certain muscles in the neck and scalp. Although not the only recommended treatment, Botox can help to relieve muscle tension.

How Can Botulinum Toxin Help?

Botulinum toxin is a treatment that can help reduce the frequency and severity of tension headaches. It works by blocking the release of certain chemicals involved in pain transmission and by relaxing the muscles that can contribute to headache pain.

What to Expect During the Treatment?

  • Consultation: You'll meet with a specialist to discuss your tension headache symptoms and see if botulinum toxin is right for you.
  • Preparation: The treatment areas, typically around the head and neck, will be cleaned.
  • Injection: Botulinum toxin is injected into specific muscles around the head and neck. The process usually takes about 15-20 minutes.
  • Post-Treatment: You can return to your normal activities immediately, but you should avoid heavy exercise for a day or two.
